Democrat Mark Critz will follow in the footsteps of his late boss, U.S. Rep. John Murtha, as the representative for the 12th Congressional District.

Critz received 53 percent of the vote against Republican Tim Burns of Eighty Four, who received 44 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s special election. Libertarian Demo Agoris had received 2 percent of the vote with 589 of 591 precincts reporting as of 12:05 a.m.

Critz and Burns were also nominated to represent their respective parties in the November election.

Supporters and fellow political figures are on the trail with House hopefuls today in the 12th district, where Republican Tim Burns and Democrat Mark Critz are battling to succeed the late John P. Murtha.

In Tuesday's primary elections for the 12th district's next term, Burns is joined on the Republican ballot by William Russell, while Critz is on the Democratic ballot with Ron Mackell Jr. and Ryan Bucchianeri.

Critz up 6 over Burns, who faces dead-heat with Russell in primary

A close primary race has divided Republicans in the late Rep. John Murtha's district and has helped Democrat Mark Critz take the lead in the special election to replace him, according to a Susquehanna Polling & Research survey.

Critz leads GOP nominee Tim Burns 44 percent to 38 percent with one week to go. Voters on Tuesday will pick between the two to fill Murtha's unexpired term and will choose their parties' nominees for the general election in November.
