Fayette County Judge Nancy Vernon has affirmed the recommendation of the county election board to reject 96 independent ballots cast in one precinct in the 12th Congressional District special election.
Last week, the election board voted to reject the ballots, 93 of which were duplicates, filed in the recent primary election.
Vernon earlier ordered the board to determine the proper number of votes cast in the special election. That order followed an emergency meeting convened after the May 18 election, after it was learned that more than 90 voters using paper ballots early in the day at one North Union precinct were erroneously given two ballots to cast in the special election among three candidates -- Democrat Mark Critz, Republican Tim Burns and Libertarian Demo Agoris -- to fill the remainder of the late John Murtha's term.
