Pennsylvania Democrat Mark Critz has branded himself as the heir to the late Rep. John Murtha's legacy as he seeks to claim Murtha's vacant seat in a special election this month. Now, the former Murtha aide is using his connection to Murtha to go on offense, accusing his Republican opponent of smearing the longtime lawmaker in his advertising.
In a new television spot, Critz charges businessman Tim Burns with "attacking John Murtha's legacy" by airing an ad that spotlights the House Ethics Committee's investigation into dealings between Murtha's office and military contractors, and questioning Critz's role in the probe.
Burns's ad doesn't mention Murtha by name, but in his commercial Critz protests: "Tim, go ahead and attack me, but you've gone way too far when you attack someone who's no longer there to defend themselves."
