Sestak-Specter battle heats up ballot in Dem Senate primary

Four major-party candidates are vying for nomination to fill one of Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate seats.

They are Democrats Joe Sestak of suburban Philadelphia and incumbent Arlen Specter of Philadelphia, and Republicans Peg Luksik of Cambria County and Pat Toomey of Lehigh County.

Specter, a former Philadelphia district attorney who is seeking his sixth term in the Senate, told voters he always has put Pennsylvania above politics. A year ago, he put political survival above a party label as he returned to the Democratic Party.

Specter said he has maintained a strong record of tackling tough issues and working to forge bipartisan solutions to the country's most difficult problems.

Sestak, a retired Navy admiral, represented a Delaware County district for the past three years in the U.S. House. He was registered as an independent during his 31 years in the service and became a Democrat after returning to civilian life...
