In a race that grabbed national attention, Democrats narrowly held onto a congressional seat the party has controlled for nearly four decades as Mark Critz, an aide to the late Rep. John P. Murtha, won a special election Tuesday.
Murtha, who died in February, represented the 12th District for 36 years.
According to unofficial returns from the expansive, nine-county district, Critz took 54 percent of the vote and Republican Tim Burns garnered 43 percent, with about 40 percent of the precincts reporting.
"I am honored. I am humbled. But most of all, I am proud to stand before you as the next representative of Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District," Critz, 48, of Johnstown told supporters.
Burns, 42, a businessman from Eighty Four, conceded the special election at about 11 p.m. in front of supporters gathered at the George Washington Hotel in downtown Washington.
