Westmoreland commissioner Ceraso won't fill Murtha's 'big shoes'

Westmoreland County Commissioner Tom Ceraso announced he will not run for the Congressional seat held by the late John Murtha.

Ceraso issued a three-paragraph news release Thursday afternoon in which he gave no reason for his decision. Although Ceraso had not formally announced his candidacy, for the last week he had been circulating nomination petitions to run for the 12th District seat.

The three-term Democratic commissioner from New Kensington could not be reached for comment yesterday but issued a statement as part of the news release.

"Certainly, the successor to Congressman Murtha will have some big shoes to fill, but I'm sure the Democratic Party will field a strong candidate who can follow in his footsteps," Ceraso said. "There is still much to be done here in Westmoreland County, and I will continue my commitment to serve the people by working hard as a commissioner to make it a better place."

Murtha died Feb. 8 from complications...
